The Chumpom complex is marked chiefly by the presence of the Sierra
ceramic group, especially the types Sierra Red, Repasto Black-on-red, and Laguna
Verde Incised. Accompanying this slipped group are coarse red unslipped sherds,
both plain and striated in the early facet and brownish unslipped sherds in the
late facet. Both Nolo Red and Ucu Black are early. Andrews places these
respectively in the Joventud and Chunhinta groups of the Middle Formative at
Komchen, but we suspect they may be later on the East Coast. The unslipped wares
probably evolved into the early forms of the Saban group (Saban Unslipped,
Tancah Coarse). Levels 14-17 of test pit 5 in the Entrance Plaza Group provide a
cut with Sierra Red and other early forms throughout.
The suite of vessel forms includes plates, dishes, and jars from the
Sierra group as well as jars from the unslipped wares, and bowls and jars from
the Saban group.
