| Locale, Exploration, and Early Research
The first purpose of this chapter is to describe the natural setting of
Muyil. I believe that the natural setting on the edge of the karstic limestone
shelf, surrounding a depression in the karst with cave openings, and the
numerous different ecological zones, together with direct access to the sea,
provided a strong attraction for the first settlers and the later occupants of
Muyil.
The second purpose of this chapter is to describe prior research at Muyil and the research at nearby sites, all of which provides the context of my research as described in subsequent chapters.
